The cultural legacies of American jazz and Brazilian music share roots in slavery and adoption by dominant cultures, and later intersected in the 1950s with collaborations between Brazilian composers and US-based musicians increasingly appreciative of the world’s contributions to America’s music.

Recently Sherry Alves has added a Brazilian music focus to her repertoire. As an art form it shares the virtuosity of American jazz while capturing the complexities and richness of uniquely Brazilian harmony and rhythm. Bossa Nova was one result of this collaboration, introducing a softened samba sound combined with a new approach to Portuguese lyrics helped craft a sensual and exciting music that was soon a global phenomenon. Other styles include choro, samba-cançåo, and música popular brasileira (MPB) may have originated in the east in Brazil. The northeast, influenced by African culture, gave rise to baiao and maracatu (1).

Making musical moments takes skill and preparation.

Most of the work that goes into a performance is invisible to the audience. Of course there are rehearsals, and prior to that, creating and fine-tuning written music, but even before that comes the lifetime of skill and judgment offered by the musicians chosen for the stage.
